CEN Theme – “Radio for Resilient Communities”
As we celebrate World Radio Day, Community Engagement Network (CEN) proudly embraces the theme “Radio for Resilient Communities.” In South Sudan, where communities continue to face humanitarian challenges, climate shocks, public health risks, displacement, and recovery from conflict, radio remains one of the most powerful and accessible tools for strengthening resilience. For CEN, radio is not just a platform for broadcasting; it is a lifeline of trusted information, dialogue, and hope.
Across our operational locations in Malakal, Jamjang, Bentiu, Maban, and Renk, through our radio stations, Nile FM-Malakal, Jamjang FM-Jamjang (Ajoung Thok), Kondial FM-Bentiu, Radio Salam-Maban, and Narrowcasting in Renk, CEN, works with these local radio stations to ensure that communities receive timely, accurate, and life-saving information. From public health awareness campaigns on cholera and other disease outbreaks, to education, Protection of civilians and children messaging, as well as humanitarian information through partnerships with WFP, Concern Worldwide, Eye Media, UNICEF, among others, our broadcasts equip families with knowledge that protects lives and promotes wellbeing. Reliable information enables individuals to make informed decisions, reduce risks, and support one another during times of crisis. This is the foundation of resilience.
CEN’s approach goes beyond information dissemination. Through interactive radio programs, listener call-ins, community dialogues, and feedback mechanisms, we create spaces where voices are heard. Communities are not passive recipients; they are active participants. Women, youth, local leaders, and vulnerable groups share their experiences, raise concerns, and contribute solutions. By amplifying local voices, radio strengthens social cohesion and reinforces community ownership of development and humanitarian efforts.
Radio also plays a critical role in advancing peacebuilding and protection. In fragile contexts, misinformation and rumors can escalate tensions. CEN works to counter misinformation by promoting fact-based reporting and responsible journalism. Our partnerships with humanitarian actors ensure that verified messages reach even the most remote areas. By fostering informed dialogue and promoting understanding, radio becomes a bridge connecting diverse communities and supporting peaceful coexistence.
Importantly, radio remains accessible where other forms of communication may not be. It transcends literacy barriers, reaches rural populations, and operates in local languages that resonate with listeners. This flexibility allows CEN to tailor messaging to different cultural contexts while maintaining a unified mission across all stations. Whether in urban centers or remote settlements, radio continues to unite communities through shared information and collective experience.
“Radio for Resilient Communities” reflects CEN’s core commitment: strengthening communities through information, engagement, and empowerment. As we mark World Radio Day, we reaffirm our dedication to using radio as a trusted tool for humanitarian response, education, protection, and peacebuilding. Together with our partners and the communities we serve, we will continue to ensure that every voice matters and every message builds a stronger, more resilient South Sudan.
